 Breaths Held at the Track! 16.09.2007
Fans were at the grandstands and special guest venues on the pits at the Izmir Race Track to watch the enjoyable struggles at the end of the fifth week of the race whose main sponsor is Opel. The Opel pilot Özen Özer became the first in both races in Group 1600 at the 9th and 10th races of the Turkish Track Championship held in Izmir. By winning all of the 10 races held this season Özen guaranteed the title for this year.
On Sunday there was a pretty hard struggle among the Group 2000 drivers racing together with Group 1600 and Group Maxi drivers. The Group 2000 drivers Berke amazed everyone with his way of driving his Opel Corsa. However, he was unlucky at the first race of the day. The Opel driver Berke Bayındır, who started the race in the 8th place right after the electrical problem during the qualifying tours, moved to the 3rd place in his group. However, Berke did not finish the race as the Corsa’s suspension was broken when a piece of metal blocked the wheel by hitting the right front rim of the car in the final laps of the race. The Opel driver Özen Özer, who started the season with the goal of winning the title, became the first in Group 1600 category so easily in the first race of the day and overtook many Group Maxi and Group 2000 drivers.
The 17-year-old driver of the Opel team and the last season’s Turkish Track Group 1600 champion Berke Bayındır made a big surprise by becoming the second after being hit by another rival in the 10th race of the season. In the second race of the day according to the qualifying of the first race the first six drivers’ positions were reversed. Özen was in the first position at the race where Group Maxi, Group 2000, and Group 1600 started together and Berke was at the last place as he could not complete the first race. Berke Bayındır was very fast in overtaking his rivals that started before him in the very first laps and became the 3rd in his group.
Berke, who closed the gap between himself and his rival İbrahim Okyay who was in the second place, made an attack on the start-finish straight and overtook his rival. Then as the rear right wheel of his Corsa hit the front left wheel of his rival’s car, Berke went off-track and could avoid colliding into the official box. Berke’s driving was very proficient as he was back on-track after his car started to slip on the gravel because of the damage at the rear right side of the car when cars had top speed at the end of the track. On the other hand, İbrahim Okyay was out-of-race as the rod of his BMW 320 was broken. For Berke Bayındır who made it to the second place although he started the last, the final laps were very tough. Berke, although his car lost its balance because the rear right wheel was damaged, could remain in the second place by the end of the race. Aytaç Biter became the first in Group 2000 and Berke Bayındır became the second with his 1800 cc Opel Corsa and Göksu Eroğlu became the third.
The Group 1600 driver of the Opel Performance Özen Özer won the second race of the day and ended the day with double success. By winning all of the 10 races this season Özen guaranteed the title. Opel Performance team was applauded and cheered by the fans at the grandstands for completing the 5th week of the Turkish Track championship with success as they got 2 first places and 1 second place in Izmir.
